Storage capacity is one of the easiest PC specs to underestimate. A new system with a fast 1TB NVMe SSD sounds generous until you install Windows, a few large games, and the applications you actually use. For a professional workstation, active video projects, CAD files, source footage, 3D assets, or local AI models can consume that space even faster.

Our general recommendation for most new custom PCs is simple: start with a 2TB NVMe SSD if the budget allows. It is the practical sweet spot for many gaming systems, developer machines, and general-purpose high-performance desktops. A 1TB drive is still workable for a focused build, while 4TB and larger configurations make sense for people working with large files or who simply do not want to manage storage every few months.

Why usable storage is less than the number on the box

A 1TB SSD does not provide a full 1,000GB of space to fill. Windows reports capacity differently from drive manufacturers, so a 1TB drive typically appears as roughly 931GB before Windows, recovery partitions, and installed software take their share.

Then there is free space. SSDs work best when they are not packed to the ceiling. As a practical rule, keep around 15% to 20% of an SSD free. This gives the drive room for temporary files, game patches, Windows updates, and its own background management. It also prevents the unpleasant experience of stopping an install to decide which game has to go.

In real use, a 1TB system drive may leave only 700GB to 750GB of comfortably usable room after Windows and essential programs. That is enough for some people, but it is not a huge amount once modern software enters the picture.

How much storage gamers need

Game sizes vary wildly. Smaller indie games may occupy only a few gigabytes, while current major releases regularly use 80GB, 120GB, or more. Add high-resolution texture packs, mods, recorded clips, and a healthy rotation of multiplayer games, and a drive fills up faster than expected.

1TB: suitable for a focused gaming library

A 1TB NVMe SSD is reasonable when you play a handful of games at a time, do not keep extensive recordings locally, and are comfortable uninstalling titles you have finished. It is also a sensible way to protect the budget in an entry-level gaming PC, where spending more on the graphics card will usually produce a much larger performance gain.

We would not call 1TB luxurious, but it is no longer unreasonably small. It is a functional starting point for a budget-conscious gamer.

2TB: the best default for most gaming PCs

A 2TB NVMe SSD gives a gaming PC breathing room. You can keep a substantial game library installed, leave space for updates, and store screenshots, clips, and everyday files without constantly watching the capacity meter.

For most people buying a midrange or premium gaming PC, 2TB is the capacity we would choose before paying extra for an ultra-fast drive that provides little noticeable improvement in game loading. Capacity is often more valuable than a benchmark-winning sequential read number.

4TB: for large libraries, mods, and local recordings

A 4TB SSD is worthwhile for players who keep dozens of large games ready to play, use large mod collections, record high-bitrate gameplay, or share a PC with several people. It is also a good fit for a higher-end system expected to stay in service for years.

There is no performance requirement that says a gaming PC needs 4TB. It is about convenience. If you dislike storage housekeeping, larger storage is money well spent.

How much storage creators and professional users need

Professional storage needs depend less on the application name and more on the size of the files you open, generate, and retain. A developer with several code repositories may be perfectly comfortable with 2TB. A video editor working with high-bitrate 4K footage can fill 2TB with a single active project and its cache files.

Photo editing, CAD, and software development

For Lightroom catalogs, Photoshop work, typical CAD projects, software development, office files, and general business use, 2TB is usually a strong starting point. Choose 4TB if you retain many years of raw photos, work with large scan data, maintain multiple virtual machines, or want your active projects and archives on the same fast drive.

Architectural and engineering users should consider the full project workflow. Individual drawings may be modest, but linked files, point clouds, Revit models, visualization assets, and project backups can change the answer quickly.

Video editing, 3D work, and point-cloud processing

For video editing, 3D rendering, photogrammetry, and point-cloud workflows, plan storage deliberately. These applications can use space for source media, project files, previews, render outputs, caches, simulations, and exports. Temporary working files are not optional; they are part of the job.

We commonly recommend at least 2TB of fast NVMe storage for the operating system, applications, and active work. From there, add a second 2TB or 4TB NVMe SSD for current projects and scratch files when budgets and workloads justify it. Separating active media from the operating system can make organization easier and helps prevent a large project from leaving the system drive nearly full.

For serious video and 3D workflows, 4TB of total fast SSD storage is often a more realistic baseline than 2TB. Heavy 4K, 8K, RAW video, large simulations, or dense scan data may justify considerably more.

Local AI and machine learning

Local AI workloads can need substantial storage for downloaded models, datasets, Python environments, checkpoints, and generated outputs. A few models are manageable on 2TB, but users experimenting with several model families or maintaining datasets should strongly consider 4TB or more.

Do not confuse system RAM or GPU VRAM with SSD capacity. They solve different problems. VRAM determines what the GPU can hold while processing; SSD storage holds models and data when they are not actively loaded.

One large SSD or multiple drives?

For most gaming PCs, one quality 2TB or 4TB NVMe SSD is clean, fast, and sensible. It avoids unnecessary complexity, and modern NVMe drives are plenty quick for games and everyday work.

Multiple drives are useful when they serve a clear purpose:

  • System drive: Windows, applications, and general files.
  • Project drive: Active video media, 3D projects, datasets, virtual machines, or large working files.
  • Archive drive: Completed projects and files that must remain accessible but do not need top-tier speed.
  • Backup drive: A separate copy of important data, ideally supplemented by an offsite or cloud backup.

A second SSD does not automatically make every application faster. It can help in workflows that read and write large amounts of data at the same time, but its biggest benefit is usually capacity and organization. Avoid buying several small drives merely because more drives seem more professional. Buy them when the workflow calls for them.

Fast storage is not the same as safe storage

An SSD is excellent for speed, but it is not a backup plan. Drives can fail, files can be deleted, ransomware exists, and project folders can be overwritten by a well-meaning teammate. If the files matter, maintain at least one separate backup copy. Important business or client data should not live on only one internal drive.

External drives, a network-attached storage device, and reputable cloud backup services can all play a role. The right choice depends on how much data you have, how quickly you need it restored, and whether you need access away from the office.

Practical storage recommendations

  • Budget gaming PC: 1TB NVMe SSD, with an open upgrade path if possible.
  • Most gaming PCs: 2TB NVMe SSD.
  • Large game library, modding, streaming, or recording: 4TB NVMe SSD, or a 2TB primary drive plus additional storage.
  • General professional workstation: 2TB NVMe SSD minimum; 4TB is preferable for larger files, virtual machines, or long retention periods.
  • Video, 3D, photogrammetry, point clouds, and local AI: Start with at least 4TB of fast SSD capacity across one or more drives, then plan separate archive and backup storage around the size of your ongoing projects.

When configuring a new PC, it is often smart to buy enough primary storage from the start. Adding an SSD later is usually straightforward, but a properly planned storage layout is easier to build around than to fix after the drive is full and your files are scattered everywhere.

Choose capacity for the way you actually work

The right amount of PC storage is not based on bragging rights. It is based on how many games, projects, media files, and applications you need available at once, plus room to work without constant cleanup. For many buyers, 2TB is the sensible answer. For demanding creative and technical workloads, 4TB or a multi-drive layout is often the better long-term decision.
